barrel head racing ™

This is my take on the classic DIY horse racing game. Made on a repurposed bourbon barrel head, this game board is laser etched for clean and clear gameboard. The holes in the board allow for the game pieces to either be the supplied new gold 3D printed horses or the pewter horse which has also been repurposed from a empty bourbon bottle.

Each game board come with the dice and card set.

Custom laser etching can be entertained starting at $25, please contact me directly.

  1. Card deck: remove the Ace, King and Queen and Joker. Handout the cards to everyone that ‘anted’ up.  Distribute the remainder of the cards evenly. If there is an uneven amount of cards to players, you can determine to make it uneven or discard the remainder.  These cards become your ‘betting slips’ and become your key to winning the game.

    • The number on the cards (betting slips) represents your horse.  2=2, 3=3 etc.  The Joker=11 and the Queen=12.

    • Note: Just like in horse racing, multiple people can bet on the same horse.  In this game, if the cards are handed out evenly there will be four cards of the same horse number.  Sometimes the same person may hold 2, 3 or 4 of the same card, which is fine.  If that horse wins, the payout will be larger because that person has more bets on the same horse.

  2. Time to roll the dice. The corresponding horse drops back one space (25) and becomes the first Scratch Horse. Repeat

    • Second roll moves the corresponding horse 2 spaces to the 50.

    • Third roll moves the corresponding horse 3 spaces to the 75.

    • Fourth roll moves the corresponding horse 4 spaces to the 100.

    • If a repeat horse is rolled, roll again until a new horse is rolled.

    • These horses are scratched and will not run in the race.  From this point forward, during gameplay if these horses are rolled it will require the person rolling to pay the pot the according value.  If you have a card that matches the scratch horse, remove it from your hand and place it in a discard pile.

  3. The remainder of the horses are still in the race and one of them will cross the finish line first.  Cheering for your horse(s) will greatly improve your chance of winning!

    • Note: It is up to the house to determine the denominations for betting.

    • Game play starts clockwise.

  4. Player 1 rolls the dice. If the value on the dice matches a horse on the starting line, ADVANCE that horse forward 1 space. If the value on the dice matches a horse on the scratch line PAY the pot the according value.

    • Continue gameplay until a horse crosses the finishing line. Winner is the person(s) that is holding the card(s) (betting slip) that matches the horse which crossed the finish line first.

  5. Distribute the pot to the players with the winning betting slips.   Typically, the pot is split evenly 4 ways, ¼ to each person that holds the winning horse.   If a person holds more than one winning card, distribute a ¼ stack for each winning card that person has.  (If a person holds two betting slips of the same horse they would receive ½ of the pot).
